Motorcyclist Dies in Head-On Collision in Mountain View
A 24-year-old motorcyclist, Tyler Napoleon of Hilo, died following a head-on collision with a sedan in Mountain View early Saturday morning, according to Hawaii island police.
The crash occurred at 12:51 a.m. on South Glenwood Road. Police report that Napoleon was riding a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle southbound and had passed several vehicles in a no-passing zone before colliding with a 2014 Mazda sedan on a blind hill.
First responders transported Napoleon to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:49 a.m. The driver of the Mazda, a 43-year-old man from Volcano, sustained no injuries.
Authorities stated that speed and reckless driving are under investigation as potential factors in the crash. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Police noted that Napoleon was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
This incident marks Hawaii County’s 17th traffic fatality of 2023, compared to 13 fatalities at this time last year.
