A hit-and-run collision claimed the life of a 45-year-old scientist on Highway 138 in Crestline on Easter Sunday, officials confirmed.

The crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. on April 5, involving a motorcycle and a gold Chrysler minivan just east of the 15 Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) logs.

The motorcyclist, identified as Taylor Cole, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the minivan fled the scene and remains at large.

San Bernardino County Coroner’s officials confirmed Cole’s identity. He was the Chief Technology Officer at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center in Corona.

CHP officers deployed a helicopter to search the area for the suspect, while local hospitals were contacted regarding any recent crash victims. The minivan and motorcycle were towed using specialized equipment for evidence collection.

Highway 138 was closed in both directions at the crash site, alongside the 15 Freeway connector roads leading to eastbound Highway 138 for the investigation.

A memorial described Cole as a “true American patriot” and an adventurous spirit, known for recent participation in a world record-breaking skydive. He leaves behind a daughter.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the investigation. Witnesses with information are encouraged to contact the CHP’s San Bernardino Area Office at (909) 383-4247.
