MURRAY, Neb. (LOCAL NEWS WIRE) — An Omaha woman received her sentence Tuesday for causing a fatal motorcycle crash in Cass County last year.
Shelly Hayes, 56, was sentenced to two years probation and one year without a driver’s license, along with 20 hours of community service. The sentencing took place in Cass County Court before Judge David Partsch.
In February, Hayes pleaded “no contest” to one count of motor vehicle homicide, a misdemeanor. The charge is related to a crash on Sept. 7, 2024, that killed 30-year-old Zachariah Unruh of Auburn, Nebraska.
According to investigators, Hayes was driving an SUV southbound on Highway 34 near Kenosha Road when she attempted to turn into a driveway and collided with Unruh’s motorcycle.
Unruh was thrown into a ditch after his motorcycle struck Hayes’ vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that Unruh was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
