Box Elder County sheriff placed on leave following crash in Weber County that left a woman critically injured.

OGDEN — Box Elder County Sheriff Kevin Potter was involved in a crash on Tuesday that critically injured a 22-year-old woman on a motorcycle, authorities said.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of Canyon Road and Valley Drive. The Ogden Police Department confirmed that Potter was the driver of the vehicle that collided with the motorcycle.

According to a police statement, the motorcycle was traveling eastbound when it struck the vehicle turning from Valley Drive onto westbound Canyon Road. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Sheriff Potter remained at the scene and is currently on voluntary administrative leave while the Ogden Police Department and the Weber Metro CRASH team conduct an investigation. “Our thoughts are with the injured motorcyclist and her family,” authorities stated.

Potter was already facing scrutiny after being formally censured by Box Elder County commissioners in May for unrelated conduct. The censure letter indicated violations of county personnel policies, including alcohol-related issues while on duty.

As of Friday, evidence from the scene included scuffed asphalt and green paint markings outlining the crash area. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities expect it to take several weeks to conclude, involving detailed scene reconstruction and witness interviews.

Box Elder County commissioners emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust and adherence to policies, especially given the sheriff’s position.
