DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. — An 18-year-old driver has been charged with a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a bicyclist on Delsea Drive.
Iqrar Ahmad, a local resident, faces a second-degree charge for leaving the scene of the accident that occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. on the 1700 block of Delsea Drive near Brenner Avenue.
Authorities reported that another driver contacted them after striking the bicyclist, who subsequently fell into the roadway and was then hit by a second vehicle. This second vehicle left the scene traveling north on Delsea Drive, with a witness stating the driver briefly stopped before departing.
Ahmad returned to the accident scene approximately two hours later, claiming to be the driver of the second vehicle. According to the prosecutor’s office, he stated to police that he saw the bicycle and another vehicle on the road and felt an impact, which he initially believed to be an object like a rock.
Prosecutors noted that Ahmad reported seeing damage to his vehicle’s grille but did not realize he had hit a person. After returning home and discussing the incident with a family member, he decided to come back to the scene.
If convicted, Ahmad faces up to 10 years in state prison. The investigation remains ongoing.
