WELLS COUNTY, Ind. — A 21-year-old driver faces multiple charges following a high-speed crash that resulted in a fatality on April 5.
Authorities identified the driver as Hunter Cooper, who has been charged with reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter, criminal recklessness, and reckless driving.
According to the Indiana State Police, Cooper’s vehicle was recorded traveling at 124 mph just moments before it lost control on County Road 200 West.
The BMW crashed into a utility pole and rolled into a field, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Gavyn Orlando, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cooper was injured in the crash and transported to a hospital. Another passenger, Anthony Dalley, 20, was ejected from the vehicle and also hospitalized.
Investigators noted that Cooper initially reported a speed of approximately 60 mph before losing control. A toxicology report found no evidence of alcohol or drugs in his system at the time of the crash.
Multiple agencies responded to the accident and conducted an on-scene investigation. Lane closures were implemented for the duration of the response.
