HONOLULU (Local News Wire) – On Friday, the Ochoa family marked 100 days since Cruz Eddie Ochoa Jr. was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Kewalo Street.
The family is advocating for traffic safety measures, including the installation of speed humps near Wilder Avenue and Keeaumoku Street, areas cited for speeding issues.
According to police, Ochoa Jr. was struck in April, and the investigation remains ongoing. His family fears further tragedies could occur if traffic conditions are not addressed.
Danielle Cabalis, Ochoa’s girlfriend, highlighted the need for improved visibility due to overgrown trees in the vicinity. “It’s scary to see, and we would hate for this to happen to someone else,” Cabalis stated.
At a Makiki Neighborhood Board meeting on Friday, community members voiced support for the family’s petition addressing safety concerns. “I’m going to send a letter to ensure proper communication is heard,” said board member Adam Kirchmann.
The family reported that the state Department of Transportation indicated traffic studies would be required before improvements could proceed.
The petition has garnered community support and aims to push for meaningful safety enhancements to prevent future incidents.
