First responders report an increase in motorcycle crashes during the early weeks of spring.

(WFSB) – First responders report a surge in motorcycle accidents in Connecticut since late March, urging caution among riders and drivers.

According to Michael Turcio, Operations Manager at American Medical Response in New Haven, crews have responded to 20 motorcycle incidents, many resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. He noted, “Nicer weather has increased activity, but we are seeing a lack of helmets and speeding.”

Authorities emphasized that both motorcycle riders and vehicle drivers share responsibility for safety. Turcio stated that distracted driving and excess speed are contributing factors.

Josh Parker, a New Haven motorcyclist with 15 years of experience, highlighted the thrill of riding but acknowledged the dangers. He wears protective gear including a helmet and armored clothing, stressing the need for heightened awareness on roads.

The state reports over 50 motorcyclist fatalities each year, and nationwide figures reached more than 6,300 in 2023—the highest since 1975.

“This weekend is expected to have ideal riding conditions, and we urge everyone to ride safely,” Turcio added.

First responders provided safety tips for drivers: check blind spots frequently, pass motorcycles with caution, and be wary of turn signals, which may not automatically cancel on motorcycles.
