HICKSVILLE, New York (WABC) – A man was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on Friday for a 2005 high-speed crash that killed 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo.
Ganesh Shenoy, 54, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the second degree on February 6. The incident occurred on April 11, 2005, when Shenoy allegedly drove twice the speed limit and ran a red light at Levittown Parkway and Old County Road, colliding with Mastropolo’s vehicle.
The force of the impact destroyed Mastropolo’s car and caused it to collide with a Freightliner box truck stopped at the intersection. First responders pronounced Mastropolo dead at the scene. Shenoy initially sought medical treatment but left the hospital without care.
Following the crash, Shenoy boarded a flight to Mumbai, India, just two weeks later, despite having his New York State Driver’s License and Indian Passport confiscated by law enforcement. He remained in India for 20 years before being extradited back to the U.S. for trial in September 2023.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly stated that Mastropolo’s family has awaited justice for two decades. “Today was that day,” she said during the sentencing.
In emotional statements, Mastropolo’s daughter, Krystina Morrone, expressed the profound impact of her father’s loss on their family.
Authorities confirmed that Shenoy’s case marked the first extradition from India to the U.S. since 2017.
