Grateful Dead Fans Mourn Bay Area Couple Tragically Killed in Utah Crash.

A motorcycle crash on Highway 50 near mile marker 136 on Monday afternoon resulted in the deaths of two local residents.

The incident occurred around 2:41 p.m. when a box truck crossed into the motorcycle’s lane, fatally injuring Clifton, 69, and Katz, 70, on impact, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries. Authorities suspect speed and drowsy driving may have contributed to the crash.

The highway was partially closed for five hours while Troopers conducted an investigation. No further details about the ongoing investigation were provided.

Friends described the couple, known for their participation in the Deadhead community, as devoted music lovers and generous individuals. Katz, a retired nurse, had recently returned to work during the pandemic, while Clifton, a retired firefighter, was recognized for his photography at concerts.

Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, where Clifton was a regular attendee, expressed condolences, praising the couple’s commitment to both music and each other. A statement from the venue highlighted their presence at live shows and their love, citing a line from a Grateful Dead song.

Days prior to the incident, Clifton shared news of becoming a grandfather, illustrating their deep ties to the community and each other. The couple had attended recent concerts celebrating the Grateful Dead’s legacy, cementing their connection with fellow fans.

Maryanne Asta, a friend, expressed her shock at the loss via social media, urging for support and prayers for the families impacted by the tragedy.
