Crash that killed 3 people in Missouri started after alleged kidnapping in Nebraska, pursuit in Iowa
ATCHISON COUNTY, Mo. — A crash on Sunday morning resulted in three fatalities and three injuries following an alleged kidnapping incident in Nebraska.
According to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted around 6:12 a.m. by a woman at a hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, claiming her acquaintance had kidnapped her and her 1-year-old child in Nebraska. The woman reported being run over by the suspect before he fled with the child in a 2023 Kia Sorento.
At approximately 7:14 a.m., the Iowa State Patrol initiated a pursuit of the vehicle near U.S. Highway 2 and Interstate 29. The suspect failed to stop and subsequently entered Interstate 29 traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.
Fremont County deputies were informed and intercepted the pursuit. The suspect, a 29-year-old man from Bellevue, Nebraska, was involved in a collision with a 2013 Ford Focus operated by two 18-year-olds from Kearney, Missouri. The crash resulted in the deaths of the driver and a passenger from the Focus.
After the collision, the suspect’s vehicle caught fire, and a Fremont County deputy rescued the child, who was airlifted to an Omaha hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The deputy injured in the pursuit was treated and released from a local hospital. Further details regarding the individuals involved have not been disclosed.
