(FOX 9) – Minnesota officials report a significant increase in motorcycle fatalities this summer, with 37 deaths recorded so far in 2026, up from 24 during the same period in 2025.
Authorities from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety indicated this surge marks the highest number of motorcycle fatalities in decades. Officials project that if trends continue, the state could see approximately 90 deaths by year-end.
Most incidents involve single-vehicle crashes, often linked to speeding and impairment. Officials noted that about half of all motorcycle fatalities occur in the Twin Cities, while the other half take place in rural areas.
Mike Hanson, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety, stressed the importance of wearing high-visibility protective gear and helmets. “It’s just like a seatbelt. That helmet can save you when nothing else will be visible,” Hanson stated at a press conference.
Hanson urged drivers to be vigilant for motorcyclists, advising them to utilize mirrors before making lane changes or turns.
To enhance rider safety, the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Training Center offers various training programs for all skill levels. According to Hanson, these programs provide affordable, high-quality education for new and experienced riders alike.
