Motorcyclist fatalities surge in Texas.

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) highlighted rising motorcycle fatalities as part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, emphasizing the need for driver vigilance on the roads.

In 2022, nearly 600 motorcyclists died in crashes across Texas, with serious injuries exceeding 2,400. Authorities reported a 7% increase in motorcycle fatalities and a 21% rise in fatal intersection crashes in 2023 compared to the previous year.

“Motorcycles are smaller and harder to spot,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “We need to pay extra attention when sharing the road to ensure everyone gets home safely.”

The TxDOT’s “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” campaign aims to enhance awareness among drivers. The campaign underscores critical safety measures, including visually checking for motorcycles, using turn signals, and maintaining safe distances, particularly at intersections where over a third of motorcycle fatalities occur.

Additionally, TxDOT is introducing a traveling exhibit with a virtual reality component to help drivers understand the challenges faced by motorcyclists on the road.

TxDOT encourages drivers to remain attentive and to help end the tragic trend of daily fatalities on Texas roadways. For further details, contact TxDOT Media Relations at MediaRelations@TxDOT.gov or 512-463-8700.
