PHOENIX — A motorcyclist died and another driver was injured in a chain-reaction crash at Bell Road and 12th Street on Sunday morning.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to the scene just after 5:30 a.m. after a motorcycle caught fire following the collision.
First responders found the motorcyclist, identified as 34-year-old Carlos Alejandro Barnett Real, seriously injured. He was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities reported that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed on Bell Road when it crashed into a vehicle turning left onto 12th Street. The force of the impact pushed that vehicle into a second car stopped at a traffic light.
The driver of the first vehicle struck was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.
During the investigation, an alleged impaired driver collided with a patrol vehicle being used by an officer directing traffic. The officer was hospitalized as a precaution, and the driver was arrested.
Roadways in the area have since reopened.
