OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) — Two motorcyclists were seriously injured in a crash on Sunday at 2:41 p.m. on Highway 75 near the 40th Street exit.
According to authorities, a minivan struck the rear of their motorcycle, resulting in significant injuries. Both riders, Kevin and Laura Kastrup, were life-flighted to local hospitals.
Laura suffered a broken back and a cracked vertebra, while Kevin sustained multiple compression fractures that have led to long-term health issues. Both were wearing helmets at the time, which they believe played a crucial role in their survival.
Emergency responders from the Omaha Fire Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office attended the scene. The accident prompted a temporary lane closure on Highway 75 for investigation and cleanup.
Ryley Egger, highway safety office administrator with the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), noted that motorcycle fatalities increased after the state’s helmet law was repealed in 2021. In 2023, there were 22 motorcycle deaths, which rose to 32 in 2024 but decreased to 21 in 2025. Nevertheless, injuries among unhelmeted riders have reportedly increased.
The NDOT advises riders who choose to ride without helmets to complete an approved safety course and to follow all safety regulations. Drivers are also reminded to stay vigilant and minimize distractions.
