Motorcyclist Killed in High-Speed Crash in Hampton
HAMPTON, Va. — An 18-year-old motorcyclist died following a crash on East Pembroke Avenue shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police.
The Hampton Police Division reported that the motorcyclist, identified as Jaden Matheny, was traveling at 98 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. Prior to the incident, an officer conducting traffic enforcement at West Mercury Boulevard noticed Matheny weaving through traffic.
In an attempt to initiate a traffic stop, the officer pursued the motorcycle but ultimately discontinued the chase due to the high speed. Shortly after, the officer arrived at the intersection of East Mercury Boulevard and East Pembroke Avenue, where the motorcycle had collided with an eastbound vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene, and the officer administered life-saving efforts, but Matheny was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The incident remains under investigation.
