CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WJAR) — A tragic head-on collision on I-295 on Friday afternoon resulted in two fatalities and extensive lane closures.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. near the Mendon Road overpass, blocking all northbound lanes and prompting a swift response from emergency services.
According to Rhode Island State Police, a southbound vehicle lost control, crossed the median, and collided with a northbound pickup truck.
Initial reports state one driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, later succumbing to their injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the accident created significant traffic delays as crews worked for several hours to clear debris and investigate the incident.
While the identities of the victims have not been released, police noted that preliminary investigations indicate the southbound vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before the collision.
All northbound lanes were reopened at around 7:00 p.m., following the completion of on-scene operations.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
