JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. —
Dr. Ashraf “Ed” Khan, 56, of the Jefferson County Department of Health, died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday.
According to the department, the accident occurred on a local roadway, but specific details about the location and time have not been confirmed. Authorities are investigating the incident.
Dr. Khan served various roles at JCDH, including Medical Director of Disease Control. He was notably recognized for his expertise in tuberculosis, providing guidance to clinicians nationwide.
In addition to his local work, Khan contributed to infectious disease efforts in countries including Zambia, Cambodia, and Mozambique.
The JCDH shared on its Facebook page that Khan was remembered fondly by colleagues for his dedication, intellect, and compassion for patients, often going beyond expectations to provide support.
As a mark of respect, the flag outside the health department building was flown at half-staff on Tuesday.
