Angry crowd gathers at fatal Mississippi crash site, injuring several firefighters.

COPIAH COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) – A fatal crash on Sunday morning led to the injury of four volunteer firefighters as they responded to the scene.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of Lilly and Allen Roads. Authorities confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the crash, which resulted in the death of 18-year-old Ken’ Zavion Brown.

According to Copiah County Emergency Management Director Darryl Hilliard, firefighters were assaulted by a crowd of 200 to 300 people while using the Jaws of Life to rescue victims. Hilliard stated, “Firefighters had to leave some equipment due to the situation.”

Four firefighters sustained injuries; one required ambulance transport to a local hospital. Witness accounts noted that one firefighter was slammed to the ground, and others reported being pushed and having debris thrown at them.

Law enforcement arrived shortly after the 9-1-1 call but found the scene chaotic, prompting them to assist departing firefighters. Copiah County Sheriff Byron Swilley emphasized that assaults on first responders will not be tolerated.

Three injured firefighters were treated at Copiah County Medical Center, while one declined treatment. The community, known for drag racing, reportedly reacted with anger over perceived delays in the firefighters’ arrival.

The investigation into the crash and the assaults is ongoing. Authorities are working to identify suspects; anyone with information is urged to contact the Copiah County Sheriff’s Department at 601-894-1181.
