WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 15-year-old boy was injured Monday when his e-motorcycle rear-ended a car on Ganttown Road, authorities said.
The boy was traveling uphill, reportedly with the sun in his eyes, when he collided with the vehicle. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, and the boy’s helmet was discovered 75 feet from the impact site.
The teenager sustained broken wrists and was aided by the car’s driver, who promptly contacted authorities. Police reported that the driver had slowed down due to a disabled vehicle with flashing hazard lights on the shoulder.
Washington Township police are raising concerns about the safety of e-bikes, e-motorcycles, and e-scooters, which, though motor-assisted, are regulated under traditional bicycle laws in New Jersey, requiring no license or registration.
State legislators are currently attempting to pass regulations for these vehicles following several fatal incidents in New Jersey. Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik urged parents to reconsider purchasing these vehicles for children, especially with the holiday season approaching.
“Our goal is simple: keep our children safe,” Gurcsik said. “These crashes are happening far too often, and we need parents and the community to help us reduce this growing danger.”
The crash remains under investigation.
