Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks Dies in Motorcycle Crash
TAZEWELL, Tenn. — Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks, 56, died Saturday in a motorcycle accident on Highway 33 in Union County. Brooks was in the midst of a re-election campaign, having served as mayor since 2018.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Brooks was riding a Harley-Davidson northbound when he failed to navigate a curve, striking a guardrail, and came to rest on the roadway. No other vehicles were involved. The incident is currently under investigation.
In remembrance, white ribbons, wreaths, and flowers have been placed at the Claiborne County Courthouse. Residents expressed their grief, noting Brooks’ personal connection to the community.
Commission Chairman Mike Campbell has assumed the role of interim mayor until the election on August 6. Brooks’ name will remain on the ballot, and if he wins, the county attorney will decide on the next steps.
Visitation for Mayor Brooks is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Claiborne High School, followed by a funeral service. A committal service will take place at Joseph Brooks Cemetery on Friday, July 31. A candlelight vigil will be held that evening at the Claiborne County Courthouse.
