Motorcyclist Dies Following Police Pursuit and Crash in Columbia County
Columbia County, GA — A 27-year-old motorcyclist, believed to be Scott Gates of Augusta, was killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 20 West on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, troopers attempted to stop Gates for speeding near mile marker 196. He did not comply and continued westbound before crossing into oncoming traffic at mile marker 190. The pursuit was discontinued shortly before he crashed.
Officials reported that the motorcycle was found ablaze, and Gates was pronounced dead at the scene, with authorities stating he was burned beyond recognition. The Columbia County Coroner’s Office has yet to formally identify the victim, but family members confirmed his identity via social media.
Emergency crews responded to the incident, and traffic on I-20 was backed up for approximately two hours due to the investigation and cleanup efforts.
