Deadly crash halts northbound I-275 traffic near Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Crash on Sunshine Skyway Bridge Claims Life of Pinellas Park Man

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A fatal crash occurred on I-275 northbound on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge just before 1 p.m. on Sunday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 76-year-old man from Pinellas Park was riding a Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle when he took evasive action to avoid another vehicle. This action caused him to lose control of the motorcycle near milepost 12.

FHP reported that the motorcycle struck the outside guardrail and came to a stop in the outside northbound lane, resulting in the rider being ejected. He suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

Emergency vehicles responded quickly, and traffic cameras indicated significant congestion following the incident. Although one lane reopened around 3:30 p.m., traffic was again halted shortly after 4 p.m. FHP advised drivers to seek alternate routes as northbound lanes remained closed for several hours. The lanes were cleared by 5:17 p.m.

As of 2026, Pinellas County reported 2,846 crashes, resulting in 1,785 injuries and 10 deaths, as per the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data.
