BENNINGTON, Vt. — A Vermont man pleaded guilty to negligent driving following a crash that resulted in the death of actor Treat Williams on June 12.
Ryan Koss, 35, received a one-year deferred sentence and will have his driver’s license revoked for one year as part of his probation. He is also required to complete a community restorative justice program.
The collision occurred when Koss, driving a Honda SUV, turned left into a parking lot and struck Williams’ oncoming motorcycle in Dorset, according to police. Williams, 71, who was wearing a helmet, sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.
Following the incident, Koss contacted Williams’ wife to inform her about the crash. Bennington County State’s Attorney Erica Marthage stated Koss took responsibility for his actions from the beginning.
During Friday’s hearing, Koss expressed remorse and extended condolences to Williams’ family. Williams’ son, Gill, shared a heartfelt message, stating, “I forgive you, and I hope that you forgive yourself,” but added, “I really wish you hadn’t killed my father.”
The family did not seek further charges against Koss. Statements from Williams’ wife, Pam, and daughter, Ellie, conveyed the profound impact of Williams’ death. Koss initially faced a felony charge of gross negligent operation with death resulting, which could have led to a 15-year prison sentence.
Williams was known for his roles in “Everwood” and “Hair,” among others.
