East Tennessee Mayor Joe Brooks dies in motorcycle accident at 56.

CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) — Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks, 56, died Saturday following a motorcycle accident on State Route 33 near the Claiborne County line, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).

The incident occurred at approximately 2:41 p.m. on July 25, 2026, in Union County. Authorities said Brooks was traveling northbound when he failed to negotiate a curve, causing his 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle to strike a guardrail before coming to rest in the outside northbound lane.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene; however, confirmed injuries or fatalities beyond Brooks have not been reported. Towing services removed the motorcycle, and THP is investigating the incident.

Brooks, who first took office as county mayor in August 2018, was responsible for oversight of county properties and appointments to county boards. His death creates a leadership vacancy in local government.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Brooks was also known as a seventh-generation farmer and was actively involved in Brooks Farm at the time of his passing.

The Tazewell Police Department and various local officials extended condolences to Brooks’ family and acknowledged his contributions to the community. Tennessee State Senator Jessie Seal expressed shock and sadness regarding Brooks’ tragic passing.

The THP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. No charges have been confirmed at this time.
