Fatal pedestrian accident reported near Opdyke.

OPDYKE — A vehicle-pedestrian accident on I-64 eastbound near Opdyke resulted in one death early Friday.

Travon Thomas, 30, of Louisiana, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse. The identity of the driver remains undisclosed.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) reported the incident at approximately 4 a.m. on August 14. A preliminary investigation indicates a fatal crash occurred, but details regarding the circumstances are not yet confirmed.

Eastbound lanes were closed while the crash was investigated, and traffic was diverted onto Illinois 37 until approximately 8 a.m. All lanes have since reopened. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.

Emergency responders included the Jefferson Fire Protection District, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Litton Ambulance. The JFPD assisted ISP with crash reconstruction and investigation efforts, according to Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Clinton.

Clinton stated that responders determined the male pedestrian was deceased at the scene and provided assistance in ensuring the roadway remained closed until the ISP reconstructionist arrived.

The Sentinel will provide updates as more information is released.
