ATLANTA, Ga. – Brent Hinds, former lead guitarist of the heavy metal band Mastodon, died in a motorcycle crash on the evening of August 20, 2025.
Authorities reported Hinds was riding a Harley Davidson at Memorial Drive and Boulevard when a BMW driver failed to yield while making a turn. The impact resulted in fatal injuries.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Hinds’ death. He was 51 years old.
Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 and became known for his contributions to the band, which has released eight albums and won a Grammy for the track “Sultan’s Curse” in 2018.
In the months leading to his death, reports indicated a mutual parting between Hinds and the band earlier in March 2025. In August, Hinds stated he had been dismissed from the group.
The band released a statement expressing their sadness over his passing, stating, “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force.”
No further details regarding the crash investigation or lane closures have been reported.
