LINCOLN — A 17-year-old boy died following a motorcycle crash in southwest Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:41 p.m. at the intersection of Southwest 23rd and W. South. According to authorities, Derek Klotz, a senior at Lincoln Southwest High School, was involved in the crash while riding his Yamaha motorcycle.
Witnesses reported that a 69-year-old woman driving an SUV was preparing to turn left onto W. South when she heard a motorcycle approaching. LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas stated that the woman began her turn upon seeing the motorcycle’s headlight over the hill.
Klotz attempted to avoid the collision by laying down his motorcycle but slid more than 100 feet before hitting the driver’s door of the SUV. The motorcycle continued to slide nearly 400 feet before coming to a stop.
Klotz was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Lincoln Police are conducting an investigation into the crash.
