Kodiak Woman Charged with DUI and Child Endangerment After Husband’s Fatal Motorcycle Crash
KODIAK, AK — Laura Griffin, 33, faces charges of driving under the influence and child endangerment following a June motorcycle accident that killed her husband, Culen Griffin, 33.
According to Alaska State Troopers, the incident occurred on June 15 at approximately 9:41 p.m. on Chiniak Highway, Mile 32. Authorities reported that both vehicles were traveling at about 60 miles per hour when the accident happened.
Griffin told troopers that she and her husband had been drinking at a nearby campsite before leaving. Witnesses stated that her husband lost control of the dirt bike after hitting a large rock and crashed. Following the incident, Kodiak Emergency Medical Technicians declared Culen Griffin dead at the scene.
Approximately three hours later, Laura Griffin registered a blood alcohol content of 0.126 on a breathalyzer test at the Kodiak Police Department; the legal limit in Alaska is 0.08. She was driving with three children in the pickup truck at the time of the accident.
Griffin has been charged with three counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and one count of driving under the influence. Authorities said she is not being charged in connection with her husband’s death. An affidavit from Alaska Assistant District Attorney William Vitkus indicated that an autopsy could not determine whether Culen died from the crash or being run over by the pickup truck.
