Maryland school bus driver cited for negligence in fatal collision with 11-year-old cyclist.

A school bus driver has been cited following a fatal collision involving an 11-year-old girl on October 9, 2025.

According to the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD), the incident occurred at approximately 3:13 p.m. when Summer Lim, a student at Earle B. Wood Middle School, attempted to cross Russet Road.

Lim was riding her bike along the sidewalk on Bauer Drive when she entered the intersection, at which point the school bus, driven by 55-year-old Ivan Rivas, struck her while turning right onto Russet Road.

Several children on the bus called 9-1-1. Lim was found near the back of the bus and later succumbed to her injuries, authorities said.

Rivas, who has been a bus driver with Montgomery County Public Schools since 2001, moved the bus approximately 27 feet after initially stopping, according to MCPD. Authorities cited him for negligent driving, contributing to a fatal accident.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the incident has prompted further review of safety protocols for school bus operations.
