Minor killed in dirt bike wreck Sunday; officials urge safety measures

A 15-year-old boy died in a dirt bike accident Sunday on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, according to authorities.
The crash occurred around 6:40-6:45 p.m. when the dirt bike collided with a passenger vehicle. Emergency responders attended the scene, but the boy succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the victim has not been released.
Brookhaven Chief of Police Dustin Bairfield confirmed that the use of dirt bikes on city streets is illegal, emphasizing the importance of safety. “It’s tough to lose a child, especially on a holiday weekend,” Bairfield said. He encouraged community awareness of the dangers of off-road vehicles on public roadways.
Mayor Larry Jointer expressed condolences and highlighted the need for more recreational spaces in Brookhaven. “Every child in Brookhaven should have access to safe facilities,” he stated during an online press conference Monday morning.
Assistant Police Chief Willie Gayten also urged for better safety education regarding ATVs and dirt bikes. “These vehicles are not made for streets,” Gayten said, calling for parental guidance in seeking training for young riders.
