GILBERT, AZ — A 14-year-old was seriously injured in a collision involving an electric motorcycle and a car on Lindsay Road Wednesday at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Gilbert Police and firefighters responded to the scene near Freestone Park. Authorities said the teen on the e-motorcycle entered the roadway and failed to yield to oncoming traffic, resulting in the crash. The injured teen was transported to a local hospital; injuries are reported as serious but non-life-threatening.
The teenager was cited for operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. The mother of the teen was arrested for knowingly allowing her child to operate a vehicle improperly. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and was cited for driving on a suspended license.
In a statement, Gilbert Police emphasized that electric motorcycles are classified as motor vehicles under Arizona law. Riders must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, as well as have the motorcycle registered and insured.
Gilbert PD encourages parents to visit their website to verify the legality of their child’s vehicles. Last month, police conducted an operation addressing e-bike safety, leading to multiple citations and the impounding of 11 e-bikes and e-motorcycles.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
