A two-vehicle crash on WY 34, approximately 13 miles southwest of Wheatland, Wyoming, on Sunday resulted in one fatality, marking the 93rd death on Wyoming’s highways this year.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, 70-year-old Daniel R. Shaffer of Clark, Colorado, was riding a motorcycle westbound when 73-year-old Mary L. Edwards of Yuma, Arizona, driving an SUV eastbound, made a left turn and failed to yield. Witnesses reported Mr. Shaffer braked hard just before the collision, causing his motorcycle to end up on its side shortly before impact.
Despite wearing a helmet, Mr. Shaffer sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Authorities have indicated that speed and Edwards’ failure to yield are being investigated as contributing factors.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene, and both vehicles were towed from the area. Lane closures were implemented during the investigation, which remains ongoing. No additional injuries were reported.
