MAYWOOD, Ill. — One person was killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 290 Thursday night, according to Illinois State Police.
The incident occurred on eastbound I-290 at 1st Avenue shortly after 8:30 p.m. There were two motorcycles involved, and one individual was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Two lanes of traffic were closed to facilitate an investigation, and the roadway was reopened around midnight.
The crash coincided with a large gathering of motorcyclists in the Chicago area, with reports of hundreds of riders present Thursday night into early Friday morning. Witnesses noted a group of motorcyclists performing stunts on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 31st Street around 2 a.m., and others observed popping wheelies on the inbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway around 4 a.m.
It remains unclear whether the individuals involved in the crash were part of this larger group. Authorities stated that the cause of the crash is still under investigation and did not provide further details.
