HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A motorcyclist died following a collision on Kapiolani Boulevard in Moiliili on Tuesday at approximately 3:15 p.m.
According to authorities, a 67-year-old man driving westbound made a U-turn and struck the motorcyclist, a 51-year-old male, also traveling westbound.
The motorcyclist was ejected onto the roadway and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities confirmed he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Witness Account and Response
State Rep. Ikaika Olds, who was campaigning nearby, heard the crash and rushed to assist. He called for bystanders to contact emergency services and checked on the motorcyclist.
“He was face down. It didn’t look like he was breathing,” Olds reported. Police stated that the driver remained at the scene and was unharmed.
Investigation Details
The police are conducting an investigation into the crash. Witness testimonies indicated the motorist may have made an illegal U-turn, leading to the collision.
Authorities noted that speed does not appear to be a contributing factor, and it is currently unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role. This incident marks the 23rd traffic fatality on Oahu this year.
