Motorcyclist Killed in Crash with Tractor-Trailer on Trans Manhattan Expressway
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer on the upper-level eastbound Trans Manhattan Expressway early Thursday at approximately 5:19 a.m.
According to the Port Authority Police Department, first responders found the motorcyclist critically injured; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, which led to significant traffic disruptions. Inbound approaches to the George Washington Bridge were closed, forcing traffic onto local streets in Washington Heights, where NYPD traffic agents were deployed to manage congestion during the morning rush.
Fort Lee officials warned motorists to expect lengthy delays, indicating that inbound restrictions might remain in effect for several hours.
As emergency crews worked at the scene, transportation officials began restoring limited traffic flow. By midday, one left lane of the eastbound upper-level Trans Manhattan Expressway was reopened, allowing trucks and tractor-trailers through while other vehicles continued to be diverted.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist has not yet been released.
