Motorcyclist Plummets from Charleston Crosstown Overpass, Say Police.

CHARLESTON — A motorcyclist died after falling from an interstate on-ramp on April 13, leading to significant lane closures on the Crosstown roadway.

Around 4 p.m., First responders arrived at the Interstate 26 West ramp near Coming Street, according to the Charleston Police Department. The motorcyclist lost control and struck a concrete barrier, subsequently falling onto a parking lot below near the 511 Meeting Apartments complex.

Authorities confirmed the driver died at the scene. As of April 14 at 1 p.m., the Charleston County Coroner’s Office had yet to release the individual’s identity.

Lane closures on the Septima P. Clark Parkway, commonly referred to as the Crosstown, lasted approximately two hours, as noted in CPD social media updates. Residents of the 511 Meeting Apartments were notified around 4:30 p.m. of the adjacent parking lot closure. Both the roadway and parking lot were reopened around 6:30 p.m.

Details surrounding the cause of the accident remain unclear, and investigators have not found evidence of another vehicle being involved, authorities said.

Police encourage anyone with information to reach out to CPD’s traffic unit at 843-965-4084 or submit a tip anonymously via the Charleston city website.

This incident marks the latest in a series of motorcycle-related accidents on Crosstown. Notable incidents include fatalities and serious injuries from past crashes on nearby overpasses dating back to 2007.
