Memorial Day Marks Start of 100 Deadliest Days for Drivers in Nevada
Las Vegas, NV – Memorial Day signifies the beginning of a notoriously dangerous period for motorists, known as the 100 Deadliest Days.
According to the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, this period, stretching from Memorial Day to Labor Day, historically sees an uptick in fatal crashes. “Speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving continue to needlessly claim lives on our roads,” spokesperson Anita Pepper stated.
In Nevada, 133 traffic-related deaths have been reported as of April 2024, with 96 occurring in Clark County, reflecting a slight decrease from the previous year. Teen drivers, particularly vulnerable during summer break, are three times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes during this time. Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the U.S.
Safe driving practices are critical. Authorities urge drivers to avoid impaired driving, ensure all occupants wear seat belts, and stay focused while driving.
Motorcyclist fatalities have surged by 39% through April compared to 2024, with 32 deaths statewide. In Clark County, 25 motorcyclists died, marking a 25% increase from the previous year. As May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, park officials within Lake Mead National Recreation Area emphasize the need for caution due to unpredictable road conditions.
“It is essential for all road users to prioritize safety,” Pepper added, highlighting the importance of adopting safe driving behaviors.
