North Dakota Sees Rise in Motorcycle Fatalities and Injuries as Experts Offer Risk Reduction Insights.

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Motorcycle crash fatalities in North Dakota have increased, prompting renewed calls for safety education and helmet use.

According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation, motorcycle fatalities rose from 11 in 2019 to 21 in 2022, with four fatalities recorded in 2023 thus far.

Of the fatalities, more than half involved riders not wearing helmets. “It definitely reduces your chance of a fatal injury,” said Lauren Wahlman, Safety Public Information Program Manager for the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

Lonnie Bertsch, Executive Director of ABATE of North Dakota, highlighted the importance of safety training after his own motorcycle accident years ago. “I hit the front fender of the vehicle and flew over the hood into oncoming traffic,” Bertsch said.

Bertsch now emphasizes the need for safety courses. “We go over sharp turns, acceleration, braking, corners, all kinds of things to keep people safe out on the street,” he noted.

In 2019, North Dakota recorded 181 motorcycle injury crashes, with similar numbers in subsequent years. Most injuries were associated with riders not wearing helmets.

Bertsch recommends additional protective gear, including eye protection and long clothing, to further reduce risks. To enroll in safety courses, visit abatend.com.
