Oscar-winning musician Glen Hansard, 56, died in a motorcycle crash in western Dublin early Wednesday morning.
The collision occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Lower Road after Hansard left the Wren’s Nest pub, where he attended a traditional music session. According to witnesses, he was traveling westbound when he lost control of the bike less than two miles from the pub.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was a single-vehicle crash and stated that no criminal investigation would be initiated, though police are probing the circumstances surrounding the accident. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death, including toxicology tests.
The Wren’s Nest pub issued a statement expressing deep sadness over Hansard’s passing, describing him as a talented musician who brought joy to many.
Hansard rose to fame with the Irish rock band The Frames and won an Oscar in 2008 for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly” from the film “Once.” He was also known for his involvement in the folk duo The Swell Season.
Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin mourned Hansard’s death, noting his significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape. Hansard is survived by his wife, poet Maire Saaritsa, and their young son born in 2022.
