Perth Amboy Woman Charged in Fatal Drunk Driving Incident on Pennsylvania Turnpike

A 25-year-old woman from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, has been charged after allegedly driving the wrong way on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, resulting in the death of a 50-year-old motorcyclist.

According to authorities, Onanyeli Rosario-Mesa was involved in a crash around 9 a.m. on March 30, 2025, on I-476 north in Washington Township, Lehigh County. Witnesses reported that her Honda sedan was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes before colliding with two motorcycles, killing John Sweeney Jr. and injuring another rider.

Rosario-Mesa was apprehended at the scene and reportedly admitted to consuming 2-3 shots of tequila, registering a blood alcohol level of 0.104%. A warrant for her arrest was issued on April 10, 2026, with charges including vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless endangerment.

The aftermath of the crash raised concerns about the dangers of drunk driving and the need for improved enforcement against impaired motorists.

Gavin Holihan, the Lehigh County District Attorney, will oversee the prosecution, while Brian Hrycyszn of the Pennsylvania State Police investigated the incident.

The judge will review bail conditions once Rosario-Mesa is captured and arraigned.
