DETROIT (Local News Wire) – A 17-year-old motorcyclist crashed after fleeing onto the Southfield Freeway following a reckless display of driving early Tuesday morning.
At approximately 12:10 a.m., Michigan State Police observed the youth performing a wheelie on a motorcycle near the Southfield Service Drive in Detroit. When approached by troopers, he claimed to be practicing.
While officers spoke with another motorcyclist at the scene, the teen revved his engine and drove past police onto the northbound side of the Southfield Freeway, according to authorities. In an attempt to pass another vehicle, he lost control and crashed.
After the crash, the motorcyclist got up and ran back to the service drive but was apprehended by police after a brief pursuit. The suspect sustained minor injuries and was treated before being released to his father.
The case has been referred to the prosecutor’s office for consideration of charges. “Fortunately, he didn’t hurt himself in this crash and will use this incident as a learning experience,” said Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and there were no lane closures reported. Response from emergency medical services was prompt.
