Motorcyclist Killed in Manhattan Collision with SUV Near Brooklyn Bridge
A 17-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a Chevy Tahoe in Manhattan on Wednesday at approximately 9 a.m.
According to NYPD officials, the incident occurred near City Hall as the rider, identified as Gabriel Nacato of Brooklyn, merged into northbound traffic on Centre Street after exiting the Brooklyn Bridge. Emergency Medical Services pronounced Nacato dead at the scene; authorities noted he was not wearing a helmet.
Witnesses reported personal belongings scattered around the crash site, including a baseball cap, a cartoon-emblazoned backpack, and a bouquet of flowers. The electric motorbike, which lacked a license plate, was manufactured by Deepower and is illegal for operation on city streets due to its ability to exceed 30 mph.
The NYPD has increased enforcement of illegal motorcycles and mopeds in response to a rise in fatalities linked to these vehicles. The 40-year-old driver of the SUV remained on the scene, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The fatal collision occurred at Chambers and Centre streets, an area recently targeted for street safety improvements aimed at reducing traffic incidents and enhancing cyclist protection.
