A fatal crash on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Michigan, claimed the life of a truck driver and left several road construction workers injured on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the I-275 split in Frenchtown Township, according to the Michigan State Police. The truck struck the back of a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) attenuator vehicle, leading to a jackknife and collision with a second attenuator.
All northbound lanes were closed at Exit 18/Nadeau Road and are expected to remain closed at Exit 20/I-275 until further notice, as reported by the Michigan Department of Transportation. The highway remained shut down until approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, resulting in heavy traffic on the northbound section of US-24/Telegraph Road.
The truck driver, a 41-year-old man from Bear, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. Several MDOT workers sustained minor injuries and were treated by emergency services at the site. The Frenchtown Township Fire Department also responded.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, involving both troopers from the Monroe post and officers from the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. The incident caused aluminum cans from the truck’s cargo to spill across the roadway.
