CARROLL CO., Va. – A fatal crash on Interstate 77 in Carroll County claimed the life of a 37-year-old woman early Wednesday morning.
According to the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred at 4:30 a.m. at the 11-mile marker southbound. A Ford F-150 struck a deer, causing its occupants to exit the vehicle and enter the median while the truck remained in the left travel lane.
A southbound 2021 Toyota Sienna then lost control and veered into the median, striking the two individuals. Candace Keith of Wytheville was pronounced dead at the scene, while 36-year-old Jonathan Cudo of Wirtz sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The driver of the Sienna, 60-year-old Lee Gaddies of Charlotte, North Carolina, also sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Authorities have charged Gaddies with reckless driving.
The Virginia State Police continue to investigate the incident.
