Three Confirmed Dead in Lake Pepin Boat Collision, Investigation Underway

WABASHA, MN — Three individuals died in a boat collision on Lake Pepin over the weekend, prompting an outpouring of grief in the local community.

On Saturday night, emergency responders recovered three individuals clinging to an overturned pontoon boat after it collided with a barge. Authorities confirmed that two of the deceased were members of the Wabasha Fire Department, with the investigation being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Wabasha Mayor Emily Durand expressed her shock, stating, “This is a staggering loss for our community,” emphasizing the deep connections among residents. The fire chief confirmed the loss of two firefighters, and Durand noted the impact on families and children.

The search for victims extended into Sunday with the assistance of drones, helicopters, and boats. Authorities reported that while three were rescued, three others were confirmed dead by the end of the operation.

Community members gathered at St. Felix Catholic Church on Monday night to mourn, with local faith leaders providing support. “This is really a spiritual crisis,” said Deacon John Hust, underscoring the need for communal prayer.

Details regarding the identities of the deceased have not yet been released. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
