HAMMOND, LA — A 76-year-old Texas woman died following a motorcycle crash on I-12 east on Monday afternoon.
According to Louisiana State Police (LSP), the incident occurred around 3 p.m. near mile marker 40 when a Volkswagen Atlas rear-ended a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The crash ejected both the motorcycle driver and the passenger, identified as June Volkman from Zapata, Texas.
The motorcycle driver, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital. Volkman, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered severe injuries and later succumbed to those injuries.
Authorities reported that the driver of the Volkswagen was issued a citation for following too closely. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
