Bridgeport Authorities Remind Scooter Riders of State Motor Vehicle Laws
Bridgeport officials issued a reminder for scooter riders to comply with state motor vehicle laws following recent incidents involving serious injuries and fatalities.
Authorities reported concerning trends with the increased volume of scooters and e-bikes on city streets, particularly during warmer months. Police Chief Roderick Porter noted that enforcement challenges arise, especially with younger riders. “We have seen a fatality and numerous serious injuries involving persons riding scooters,” he stated.
According to Bridgeport spokesperson Shawnna White, riders of scooters with engines under 50cc must hold a valid Connecticut operator’s license, although registration and insurance aren’t required. However, these scooters are prohibited on highways such as Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway.
White emphasized helmet requirements, stating all riders and passengers under 18 must wear helmets. Scooters with engines of 50cc or greater are classified as motorcycles and require a motorcycle endorsement, along with registration and insurance.
Riders of e-bikes producing over 750 watts must possess a driver’s license, and those exceeding 3,700 watts are classified as motorcycles. White reminded riders to remain in the right lane or shoulder if their vehicle cannot maintain street speed and reiterated the prohibition of scooters and motorcycles on sidewalks.
The community is encouraged to participate in enhancing roadway safety as emergency responses continue to address the mounting risks associated with scooter use.
