Campbell County scrutinizes dangerous intersection following fatal crash.

A motorcycle accident on Route 460 on Wednesday evening resulted in the death of 39-year-old Timothy Cartrett.

Virginia State Police confirmed that the accident occurred when a pickup truck, driven by 28-year-old Jacob Tolley, pulled in front of Cartrett’s motorcycle. Emergency responders pronounced Cartrett dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that the intersection where the crash took place has recorded 18 accidents from May 2011 to March 2023. Residents are now advocating for a traffic light at this location, which is currently regulated by a stop sign.

Local resident Steve Lacy expressed concerns about the intersection’s safety, calling it a “death trap.” He cited visibility issues as vehicles approach the stop sign.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is aware of the community’s concerns. According to VDOT communications manager Len Stevens, while the agency has made improvements in recent years, further evaluation is needed before installing a traffic light. “We do feel strongly that we have a line of sight here that is conducive to safe operating through that intersection,” Stevens said.

VDOT plans to assess road conditions, signals, and signs to determine if further safety measures are warranted.
