Cheyenne Police report that a man allegedly killed a motorcycle rider while under the influence of alcohol.

CHEYENNE — A fatal motorcycle crash on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the arrest of a driver suspected of DUI, authorities said.

Oliver Birt, 29, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and failure to yield while turning left following the incident that claimed the life of 69-year-old Jim Watters.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m. near the intersection of West Lincolnway and Western Way, involving a white pickup truck and a blue motorcycle.

Authorities report that Watters succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

Birt consented to a breath test at the scene, which revealed blood alcohol concentrations of 0.30% and 0.26%, well above the legal limit of 0.08% in Wyoming, according to the affidavit by Cheyenne Police Officer James Womack.

Womack noted Birt failed a field sobriety test and stated he did not see the motorcycle while making a left turn.

Birt’s bond was set at $250,000 during a court appearance on Thursday, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for next Thursday.

This incident marks the latest in a series of serious motorcycle-related crashes in Cheyenne.
